Gems to keep your baby fill

Breastfeeding offers a multitude of beneficial effects to newborns.

The breast feeding tips mentioned here will make the task easier for mothers.

  • The baby should be placed at the breast as quickly as possible post birth right inside the delivery room. It is to be ensured that the practitioner poses no objection to nursing in the birthing room if all is normal.

  • Newborns generally crawl up to mother's breast from her abdomen and start breast feeding on their own. Ideally, this process will happen within an hour or so. The mother and baby should be spared this time together to build skin to skin contact which ensures the baby is kept warm and baby gets ample opportunity to self attach to mother's nipple.

  • Seeking professional help from a lactation expert or nurse who is knowledgeable about right breastfeeding technique would invoke proper guidance while in hospital only. The evaluation of breast feeding technique will derive beneficial tips from specialist which may prove handy later on.

  • The mother and baby should stay in the same room.

  • The visitors should be limited to allow for the bond between mother and child to develop and also permitting more time for nursing opportunities.

  • The mother and baby should learn to sleep in the same rhythm so that the baby is not starved of the breast feed while awake with hunger. This will also facilitate self flow of the milk which the baby can nurse upon with content.

  • Mothers and babies should be encouraged to sleep side by side so that no one's rest is compromised. It is often observed that crying babies will not generally latch on the nipples even though ravenous.

  • Artificial nipples should be shunned.

  • In the early days of child birth, the milk production may be scant. The baby may be fed on a bottle which ensures rapid flow of milk. Babies have an inclination to adopt any method that ensures rapid supply, so he should be distracted away from bottle once the breasts start producing sufficient quantity of milk.

  • The baby is to be nursed on demand to keep him happy and also enhance the milk supply. The baby should not be allowed to sleep during a feeding session and a maximum interval of 3 hours between consecutive feeding is to be observed. Sleeping babies should be woken up if this interval lapses.

  • The baby should be breast fed for as long as he desires which may mean a session expanding for 40-45 minutes.

  • Unnecessary restrictions in great quantities should not be imposed on the length or frequency of breastfeeding.

  • Babies not attaching properly should be compressed fed from the breasts to get more milk and external help should be sought to fix the latch on.

  • The breast is to be supported so that it does not press into baby's chin.

  • The baby should be detached gently and adequately if pain is experienced while breast feeding.
